So I was listening to Austin by Blake Shelton, and suddenly I was accosted by the Finchel feels. I’m not even sure where this came from as far as the situation is, but this if for my girl Amanda. Anyway, this is a little piece of nonsensical drabble that I didn’t even really beta. Love it or not, your choice.

The fight that broke them seemed so small, but one more argument about how she spent all her time worried about the next audition and how it wasn’t her fault that he was so unhappy with his path and the apartment might explode. Clearly things weren’t working, and something had to give.

She knows this is the way it has to be; she’s accepted the fact that until they were both ready there is no way that they can be together. Resentment would destroy them, and she couldn’t bear the thought of that. So for almost three years, Broadway has been her life. She’s playing Snow White in a brand new musical with an updated retelling of the fairytale, and she’s pretty sure it’s going to launch her career. But it all feels so empty. It’s stupid to think that his number hasn’t changed—that he’d still be living in their apartment, and she nearly drops the phone when his voice is still on the answering machine.

“If you’re calling about the bike I sold it last week. If it’s Tuesday night I’m playing poker with the guys. I’m not interested in buying a subscription for your magazine, changing my cable TV provider, or getting new carpet. If it’s anybody else, wait for the beep, you know the drill.” There’s a pause, and she waits, anticipating the end of the message. “PS, if this is Broadway, I still love you.”

The phone falls to the floor, and she stares at it for a moment before jumping to hang it up; it’s a stupid nickname, but he can only be talking about her. Curling herself into a ball on the couch, she lets out a shaky sob. After all the things she’d done and said that night, he couldn’t possibly still love her so much. Three years was a long time; surely he’s found someone else by now. Its three days before she has the courage to call again, and she’s really not sure what she’ll say if he picks up.

“If it’s Friday night I’ve got a game to cover, and first thing Saturday morning I’m going to see folks in Ohio. I won’t be home all weekend. But I’ll get back to you Sunday afternoon when I get back home.” She breathes in with the pause. “PS, if this is Broadway, I still love you.”

All she leaves is her number, but she’s sure he won’t call her back. Sunday finds her staring at the phone, and when it rings she jumps out of her skin. His name flashes on the caller ID, and her voice starts to shake.

“If you’re calling about my heart, it still belongs to you. I should’ve listened to it instead of my ambition, and then maybe it wouldn’t have taken me so long to figure it all out. I know where I belong now.” She can hear the familiar catch in Finn’s breathing. “And by the way, this is isn’t the answering machine. Can’t you tell? This is Broadway, and I still love you!”

Normalcy. The caseworker said they were supposed to establish a sense of normalcy for Emma and do all the things that they would do if she had been born their daughter. Family life suited him. It was nice to wake up every morning to a wife and daughter. It seemed simple and easy to handle. Get up, go to work, come home, eat dinner with Emma and Rachel, and go to bed. The routine was normal and relaxing, even if he had no idea how Rachel was managing her hectic rehearsal schedule now that Emma was a regular part of their lives.
